As a carer, you are more likely to be concerned about the health and wellbeing of the person you are caring for and not necessarily to be thinking about your own health & wellbeing. Whilst caring brings its own rewards, it may also lead to stresses and strains, both emotionally and physically. Nationally, we know that: · More than 80% of carers feel that caring has adversely affected their own health and wellbeing. · Out of carers who care for more than 50 hours per week, 30% report depression, 50% report disturbed sleep and 25% report back problems and other strain injuries. We are pleased to be working closely with our local G.P. Practice Teams, to raise awareness about carers’ needs and to help them to understand why it is often difficult for carers to come to the surgery for appointments. We are encouraging our local Practices to offer more flexible appointment arrangements and other services to support carers, including referring carers to us for advice, information and support. We would encourage you to register as a carer with your G.P., so that they can help you to look after your own health needs. It is also helpful if the person you care for tells their G.P. that you are their carer and gives permission for information about their health to be shared with you. Your health matters!! |
